Ford driver Gronholm, who trailed Loeb’s Citroen by 2.9 seconds at the start of Sunday’s seven stages, snatched the lead back on the first test of the day to lead by just 0.1 seconds.

But the 39-year-old Finn lost it again next time out as Frenchman Loeb went quickest next time out.

Four consecutive fastest stage times saw Gronholm put his Focus in front by 0.7 seconds with just the 3.14km blast through Mystery Creek to go.

And it was to prove enough as Loeb set the fastest time but succeeded only in reducing the gap to 0.3 seconds by the finish.

The result, which saw the best battle of the season, was Gronholm’s fifth win of 2007 and his fifth in New Zealand - a new record for the event.
